Walter Wilfrid Emm was born in Whitehaven, Cumbria, on 09 September 1900 . His father, also a Walter Emm, was a county council employee. Walter attended the University of Glasgow from 1920-1924 , taking classes in Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Physical Laboratory in his first year; Mathematics, Naval Architecture, Ship Drawing and Engineering III in his second; Natural Philosophy (Higher), Naval Architecture (Higher), Ship Drawing (Hire), Engineering Laboratory, Engineering IV and Engineering II in his third, and Naval Architecture, Naval Drawing, Engineering IV, Engineering Economics and Engineering III in his fourth and final year. He graduated with a BSc in April 1924 and subsequently became a Naval Architect. He died in Bamford, Sheffield on 14 February 1980 .
