The Rector family were influential pioneers in Illinois and Missouri. The family, led by Frederick and Elizabeth Rector, were originally from Virginia, but moved west in the early 1800s. Their children played important roles in the development of the West. Their son William (1778-1827) served as Surveyor General of Illinois, a representative to the Missouri Constitutional Convention, and director of the Bank of St. Louis. Their son Elias (1780-1822) served as Attorney General of Illinois, postmaster of St. Louis, and a state senator in Missouri.
