The Higher Education Research Institute, originally called the Laboratory for Research on Higher Education, was established at UCLA in 1973 to carry out empirical research in all areas of postsecondary education: two- and four-year colleges, universities, proprietary institutions, and adult education. The Higher Education Research Institute research programs encompass the study of academic administration and institutional management, federal and state financial aid programs, use of postsecondary education in careers, and educational equity for women. The Higher Education Research Institute administers the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP), a longitudinal study on American higher education which was established in 1966 by the American Council on Education (ACE). Dr. Alexander W. Astin, formerly with the American Council on Education was the Higher Education Research Institute's first director.
