As a student David H. Curl worked part time as a photographer for the Columbus Dispatch from 1948-1952. He was also a self-employed photographer. His work included commercial photography for businesses in the Columbus, Ohio area and photographing private events, such as weddings. Curl attended University High School in Columbus, Ohio and Ohio State University for fall quarter 1950. He transferred to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he attended from February 1951 to February 1954, earning a Bachelor of Fine Art in photography. After graduation Curl worked as a photographer for the United States Air Force, The Milwaukee Journal and Proctor and Gamble. Eventually, Curl pursued masters and doctorate degrees in instructional technology from Indiana University and devoted the rest of his career to university teaching and government service.
