He describes the passengers on shipboard; the countryside around, and the houses in, the village of Börsch; the difficulty of getting to Glückstadt; meeting friendly people on his walk to Hamburg; the amount of pipe smoking everywhere; his introduction to European society at the home of a Jewish family; attending German and English church services; visiting the gravesites of royalty in Brunswick; visiting the dome in Magdeburg; beginning his studies with Professor Tholuck in Halle; seeing the King and Queen during a gala day in Halle; and details of his cost of living as a student.
