The Pennsylvania Seamen's Friend Society, Philadelphia was incorporated 1846 to promote "social and moral improvement" of sailors. The Society has been affiliated with the Seamen's Church Institute, Philadelphia, since 1920. The Society maintained the Sailors' Home until 1930 where seamen could receive lodging, financial aid, and spiritual guidance. Much of the reform efforts centered on temperance.
