Lieutenant General (LTG) Emmett Paige, Jr. was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. He enlisted in the United States (U.S.) Army in 1947 and was commissioned through the Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey in 1952. His first assignment was with the segregated 41st Signal Battalion. Paige was in Vietnam from August 1968 to January 1970 with the 1st Signal Brigade, U.S. Army Strategic Command. First he was Chief, Special Projects Division, Communications Systems Engineering and Management Agency, then Commander, 361st Signal Battalion.
Paige was Commanding General in various capacities from 1976 to 1988: at the U.S. Army Communications Systems Agency, the U.S. Army Communications Research and Development Command, the U.S. Army Electronics Research and Development Command, and the U.S. Army Information Systems Command. Throughout his career, Paige furthered his education at the U.S. Army Infantry School, the U.S. Army Signal School, and the U.S. Army War College. He retired 30 June 1988.
