In 1976, Vivian Mayer and Sharonah Robinson, formerly known as Sharon bas Hannah, tried to have published a collection of essays reflecting the views of fat women, some of them lesbians, who were seeking recognition as a group. After several unsuccessful attempts, which are documented in the collection, Shadow on a Tightrope: Writings by Fat Women on Fat Oppression was published by Aunt Lute Book Company in l983. The book is an anthology of personal essays and poetry representing the first ten years of the fat women's liberation movement.
