Dr. James Fisher, Jr. was born in Hancock, Michigan in 1873. He graduated in 1893 from the Michigan Mining School and worked as a time at Hodge Iron Works in Ripley, Michigan. He returned to the school in 1895 as an instructor in math and physics, eventually becoming the department head as well as the Director of Adult Education in 1945 and Dean of Faculty from 1936-1946. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1953. Dr. Fisher was interested in the history of the Copper Country, the physics of music, geophysics and the Ojibwa language and regularly gave talks to local community groups about the history of the area. Dr. Fisher passed away in 1962.
