Henry Stafford Little was born in Matawan, New Jersey, on August 17, 1823, the son of William Little and Deborah Scott. After graduating from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1844, he practiced law; he later became the first president of the New York and Long Branch Railroad and served in the New Jersey legislature from 1864-1871. He founded the Princeton's Stafford Little Lectureship on Public Affairs in 1899, and was a Princeton University trustee from 1901 until his death in 1904.
