Mildred Dennett Mudgett, social work educator and practitioner, was born in Springville, New York, on August 26, 1888. She was educated at Friends School and Mount Holyoke College, graduating from the latter in 1909. She attended the New York School of Social Work and Columbia University in 1915-1916, ultimately receiving her Ph.D. in political science from Columbia in 1924. Her thesis, "Results of Minnesota's Laws for the Protection of Children Born Out of Wedlock," was published by the Children's Bureau (publication #128). Her career as a social worker began with positions with the Philadelphia Girls House of Refuge, 1909; Philadelphia Society for Organizing Charity, 1910-1913; and New York Charity Organization Society, 1914-1915. She married Bruce Mudgett on June 3, 1916. From 1918-1952, he was a professor of economics at the University of Minnesota. During that time she was active in the Twin Cities social work community, first in the Northern Division of the American Red Cross, then as field work supervisor in the social work program at the University from 1919-1929. Later, she served with a variety of social agencies including the community chests in both Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Family Welfare Association of Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Youth Commission. She was also active in professional organizations and served as the first president of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Social Workers. In 1935, she conducted a survey of schools of social work for the American Association of Schools of Social Work.

Mildred Mudgett died in December of 1984.
