The Smithwick brothers were known as "Leslie", "Dick" and "Vern" and came from Richmond, Vic. Private Cedric Leslie Smithwick (no. 3786) enlisted on 15 July 1915 and was repatriated to Australia on 8 April 1917. Private Richard Eric Smithwick (no. 3785) enlisted on 15 September 1915 and was repatriated to Australia on 10 May 1916. Driver Vernon Eldred Smithwick (no. 3118) enlisted on 11 September 1915 and was killed in action on 7 December 1916. All three brothers served with the 12th Field Company Engineers. C. L. Smithwick also served with the 5th Field Company Engineers. An apprentice cooper before he enlisted, he later worked as a cooper for Carlton and United Breweries for 43 years.
