The origins of the society are described in the minutes of the first meeting: 'The Sunday Schools connected with this society having for some time past, from various causes, been greatly neglected, a few of those Friends who were most interested in their welfare were invited to meet together to consider the present desolate condition of the Society, and out of its ruins to form a new one', Broadmead Vestry, 14 May 1838. The secretary at the time of the final meeting was E. Bale.
