The Iowa District was created at the time of the formation of the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1896. It was split into East and West Iowa Districts from 1898 to 1905 when it was rejoined and continued unaltered until 1959-1960 when the UELC merged to form The American Lutheran Church (1960-1987).
