John J. Maginnis was a United States (U.S.) Army officer who served in World War I, World War II, and the Army Reserve. He was a lieutenant in the 301st Infantry Regiment, 76th Division in the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) during World War I. He served in Europe during World War II as a lieutenant colonel and colonel. He also served in Hainaut, Belgium and was so appreciated by the community that they made him an honorary citizen in 1967.

John J. Maginnis was a lieutenant in World War I with the 301st and the 163rd United States Infantry Regiments and the 42nd Division. During World War II he was a colonel who worked mostly in civil affairs, military government operations. He served with Detachment C2B1 at Carentan and St. Mere Eglise, with Detachment B1D1 in the Department of the Ardennes and the Province of Hainaut, with Detachment A1A1 in France and Germany, and at various military government posts in the Berlin District Headquarters, the Allied Kommandature for Berlin and the Office of Military Government / Berlin District (1943-1944).
