Bruneel, John B., Sr.

In 2011 Bruneel lived in Bangor, Me. His great-grandfather, Michael F. Martin, was born in St. James, Beaver Island, Mich., in 1865. His birth is also documented in the Helen Collar papers in the Clarke Historical Library. By 1870, Michael, his parents, and his ten siblings had moved to Manistee County, Mich. In 1887 Michael married Henrietta Mellema (died 1942). From 1907 to 1927 Michael captained several Pere Marquette Line steamers including steamers numbers 6 and 8 and the Virginia. He served as Sheriff of Manistee County, 1932-1938. Michael was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, and Guardian Angels Catholic Church. He died in 1947 and was survived by three daughters, a son, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. (This information is from the collection.)
