Marie Hartig Kendall was born in 1854 in Alsace Lorraine, the daughter of a French mother and a German father. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1872 with her siblings. By 1880 she was married to Dr. John C. Kendall of Norfolk, Conn. She was a talented photographer who took artistic views of the countryside of northwestern Connecticut, particularly the area around Norfolk. Some of these images were issued as postcard sets and some were used as publicity by the New Haven Railroad. These works were signed "Mrs. J.C. Kendall."
