John Lewis Swenson was born on 3 May 1891 in Spanish Fork, Utah. He graduated for Spanish Fork High School and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. As a young man he was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission. Following his mission, Swenson worked in construction, farmed, and ranched. He served on his local school board in Bancroft, Idaho, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Land and Irrigation Company. In 1938 he moved to Provo, Utah, where he worked at Geneva Steel until retirement. He then moved to Mesa, Arizona, where he died on 19 December 1979.
