Born in Vermont, Hemenway started his journalism career as a reporter in Connecticut, moving up to editor at such newspapers as the New London Day, the Hartford Post and the Hartford Times. Elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 1917. Served on the boards of the Hartford Public Library, the Hartford Relief Committee, the New England Regional Planning Commission and helped raise funds to restore the meetinghouse in Lebanon, Connecticut.
