Born in France, Leon J. Fremaux was educated in Louisiana. He was a civil engineer and watercolorist. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate army as captain of the 8th Louisiana Infantry, Company A, and became a chief of engineers in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.
