William Thomas Marshall was born on the 14 October 1907 , son of Thomas and Edith Marshall. He was educated at Westminster City School, and then at the Imperial College of Science & Technology . He then gained practical experience with British Reinforced Eng. Co. Ltd, Stafford where he was a reinforced concrete designer. In 1934 he became an engineering assistant with F A Macdonald & Partners (Glasgow) Ltd. However an interest in the academic side of his profession led to his appointment as a lecturer of Civil Engineering at Imperial College in 1936 . He held this post until 1945 when he became a technical officer to the Institution of Structural Engineers. In 1946 he became the Professor of Engineering at St Andrews University . Then in 1952 he was appointed as the Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at Glasgow University . He remained with the University until his retirement in 1975 . Whilst at the University he also acted as the senate's Assessor 1968-1972 . He was the visiting Professor at Northwestern University in 1960, and at the University of Western Australia in 1967. His publications include: Fundamental Principles of Reinforced Concrete Design , (1951); Solutions to Problems in Structures , (1958); (with H M Nelson) Structures , (1969); and a number of papers on structural engineering.
