Louise Penrose Lietz (1891-1951) was the eldest daughter of Marie Christine Jensen Penrose (1871-1948) and Herbert Lusty Penrose (1869-1937), a typesetter for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was also the granddaughter of Louise Elizabeth Lusty Penrose (1842-1925) and Charles William Penrose (1832-1925), a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as an editor of the Deseret News. In 1917, she married Bert Lietz (1893-1972), a violinist, sign painter, and teacher, and they had seven children.

The Genealogical Society of Utah formed in 1894 as an independent institution sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1974, it became an official department of the Church and changed its name to the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages its adherents to prepare a family record known as a Book of Remembrance. This work contains genealogies, patriarchal blessings, records of ordinations and other sacred information. The scriptural basis for a Book of Remembrance derives from The Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sections 85:9 and 128:7-8, 24.
