Hide Profile

In 1706, several Presbyterian ministers organized the first presbytery in the American colonies, called the Presbytery. In 1716 this body divided into four presbyteries, meeting as a presbytery of the whole in 1717 under the name Synod of Philadelphia. In 1741 the synod split into Old Side and New Side factions, and seceding New Side churches formed the Synod of New York in 1745. The two synods reunited in 1757 as the Synod of New York and Philadelphia.
