Hide Profile

Built in 1922 and open for its first residents in the fall of 1923, the Alba Bales House provided practical experience as an integral part of the requirement for the training of home economics teachers, as mandated by the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917. The facility was originally named the Practice House, but was renamed in 1936 to the Home Management House to better reflect its purpose, and finally renamed the Alba Bales House in 1954, in honor of the first dean of the School of Home Economics. The structure continued to serve as a practical residential training laboratory until the fall of 1981.
