Three generations of the Swigart and Shedd families contributed to the Swigart-Shedd Family Collection on Pennsylvania Iron Furnaces. W. Emmert Swigart, Juniata County businessman and local historian, began the collection in the 1930s, after acquiring iron furnace photographs taken by Jacob K. Herman, an amateur photographer and iron furnace enthusiast. The collection was then passed to his eldest son, John Swigart, who continued his father's work of gathering research on the iron industry of Juniata Valley and adjacent counties. Nancy Shedd, daughter of John Swigart and former executive director of Huntingdon County Historical Society, compiled her own research, which she added to the collection planning to one day write a book on the Juniata Valley iron industry. Nancy Shedd donated the collection after she retired as director.
