Fred B. Kniffen, professor of geography and anthropology, retired from Louisiana State University in 1970, after a career that spanned 41 years. Considered a pioneer in the field of cultural geography, he rose to the rank of Boyd professor in 1967. A prolific writer, Kniffen wrote several articles and books on the cultures of the world and America. Among his publications are CULTURAL DIFFUSION AND LANDSCAPES (1990), LOUISIANA; ITS LAND AND PEOPLE, THE INDIANS OF LOUISIANA, LOUISIANA HOUSE TYPES, and CULTURE WORLDS (1951); the latter he co-authored with Richard J. Russell. Much of his academic work dealt with the role of folklife and material culture in shaping American culture. In 1978 Association of American Geographers honored him for his role in the development of cultural geography. Professor Kniffen died May 19, 1993.
