Thomas S. Hargest was born January 3, 1925 in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania. He earned his B.A. at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1950. Following graduation, he spent a year in field geology graduate work at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Mr. Hargest then spent several years working for national oil and gas companies until 1964 when he joined the Shriner's Burn Institute as the Director of the Engineering Development Section. In 1965 he was recruited to the Medical College of South Carolina where he served as the director of the Division of Clinical Engineering and as a professor in the Department of Surgery until he retired in 1985. Mr. Hargest made his career as an inventor of biomedical devices in support of the clinical efforts of the Department of Surgery. He holds numerous patents for devises he developed during his tenure at MUSC.
