Irving Grinnell was born on August 9, 1839, the son of New York Congressman Moses Hicks Grinnell (1803-1877) and Julia Irving (1803-1872). He had two sisters, Julia and Fanny; his uncle was Massachusetts Congressman Joseph Grinnell (1788-1885). Irving Grinnell received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College (now Columbia University) and worked for his father's shipping firm before retiring to Dutchess County, New York. He was a member of the New York Yacht Club and served as its commodore. He married Joanna Dorr Howland (d. 1905). Irving Grinnell died on May 11, 1921.
