Department of Virginia was separated from the Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina on 18 Jan. 1865. On Apr. 19 1865 it was attached to the Division of the James. Upon the capture of Richmond this city became the Department's headquarters. On June 27, 1865, the Dept. was attached to the Division of the Atlantic, and on Aug. 6, 1866 merged into the Dept. of the Potomac. On Mar. 11, 1867 it was reorganized as part of the First Military District. In Jan. 29, 1870 the District was merged into the Department of Virginia.
