George Nichols (1827-1907) was born and died in Northfield, VT. He graduated from Vermont Medical College in Woodstock in 1857. He served as surgeon with the 13th Vermont Volunteers during the Civil War. Nichols also served as Secretary of State from 1865 to 1884 and as State Librarian from 1848 to 1853. He was elected president of the Northfield National Bank in 1875. George Nichols served as NU trustee from 1866 to 1907, treasurer from 1866 to 1875, and as acting president from 1885 to 1895. He married Ellen Maria Blake (d.1906) in 1852 and the couple had two children, both of whom died in infancy. He died 28 April 1907.
