Son of Minnesota Sioux missionary and Presbyterian minister, Samuel William Pond.

From 1834 to 1853 Samuel Pond and his brother, Gideon, ministered to and taught the Sioux, first at Lake Calhoun, and later at Oak Grove (Gideon) and Shakopee (Samuel). Both remained at their missions following the Sioux removal to reservations and formed congregations among families settling the ceded lands.
