Howard Sparhawk Kneedler was born on June 16, 1848, the son of Jesse Kneedler and Catharine Sparhawk of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After attending the University of Pennsylvania between 1865 and 1868, he returned to Philadelphia, where he worked as a manufacturer. In 1886, he married Mary Tilghman Earle of Washington, D. C., the daughter of George Earle and Mary Chamberlain. Mary T. Earle was born on January 17, 1854, and taught at a girls' school located at "The Cedars," a home in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D. C. Howard and Mary Kneedler had two children, Howard and Edith. Mary Earle Kneedler died on May 28, 1919, and Howard S. Kneedler died on March 17, 1930.

Francis Reeve Cope (1821-1909) and Anna Stewardson Brown (1822-1916) had nine children, including Thomas Pim (1852-1944), Alfred (1857-1897), and Francis Hazen (1859-1909). Thomas Pim Cope attended Haverford College in 1870.
