Variant namesMajor R. Ellis was in the U.S. Marine Corps. He took many pictures while traveling in the military as well as at home. According to internet research, Winfield Scott Ellis died in Pendleton, Ky., and the death certificate was signed by "Roy Ellis", possibly his son. Current online photographs of the gravestone of Winfield Scott Ellis, Sarah Victoria Ellis, and Arnold Victor Ellis, also shows the name: Roy Holten Ellis (1886-1955), probably the same individual.
