Phelps, Abraham M., 1798-approximately 1885
Variant namesPhelps was born in Vermont. Heading west in 1820, he opened a store in Evansville, Ind. in 1828, and in Newburgh, Ind. in 1830. He traded south along the Ohio River, was involved in the coal business, and owned considerable land. He was also an officer and stockholder in the Central Plank Road Company, a toll road from Newburgh to Boonville.
