Henry Jenkyns (1795-1878) was educated at Eton College and at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and was a fellow of Oriel from 1818-35. In 1833 he became the first professor of Greek and classical literature at the University of Durham and in 1835 he also became acting professor of Divinity. In 1839 he became the last prebend of Durham Cathedral before the reforms of 1840 and from 1840-1864 he was Professor of Divinity (resigning the Greek and classical chair in 1840).
