Popular author of children's books; contributor of fiction and verse to juvenile periodicals; resident of Wayside (formerly home of Nathaniel Hawthorne) in Concord, Mass. Born Harriett Mulford Stone on June 22, 1844, in New Haven, Conn. Began contributing to Wide Awake in 1878. Her Five Little Peppers and How They Grew was first published as a book in 1881, having been printed serially in Wide Awake in 1880. Sequels about the Pepper family followed. Author also of (among other titles) Hester and Other New England Stories (1886).

(Cont.) A Little Maid of Concord Town (1898), and A Little Maid of Boston Town (1910). In 1881, Harriett Mulford Stone (pen name: Margaret Sidney) married publisher Daniel Lothrop, whose Boston firm specialized in juvenile literature. In 1883, the Lothrops purchased Hawthorne's Wayside in Concord. Their daughter Margaret was born in 1884. Daniel Lothrop died in 1892. Harriett later acquired and restored Ephraim Bull's Grapevine Cottage. Founder of the Old Concord Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Old North Bridge Society of Children of the American Revolution.

(Cont.) In later years, she made her home in California, summering in Concord. She died in San Francisco, Aug. 2, 1924.
