Frederick B. Prentice was born January 15, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University in 1951, his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Yale University in 1953 and 1954, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California in 1969. From 1969 to 1989, Prentice was associate professor of music and director of university choral activities at The University of Alabama.
In 1962, Frederick married Sigrid Dueland. The couple had one son and two daughters, Holly, Tracy, and Wendy. Frederick Prentice died July 15, 1990, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
