Freddie Pitcher was born in Baton Rouge, La., on April 28, 1945, to Freddie Pitcher Sr. and Lucy Ingram Pitcher. He graduated from McKinley High School (1962) and Southern University (B.A., 1966; J.D., 1973). He co-founded the law firm of Pitcher, Tyson, Avery, and Cunningham and was elected Baton Rouge's first African-American city court judge in 1983. Pitcher also was elected judge of the 19th Judicial District Court (1987) and the First Circuit Court of Appeals (1992). He became a full professor and chancellor of the Southern University Law Center in 2003.
