Boettger served in the Merchant Marine as an engineer during World War II, and he survived the Roll of Drums and the sinking of a the USAT Oneida. He married Elenor Langeland, raised three children, worked for Cleveland Oil Tankers Inc. and Mirro Aluminum Corp, and settled in his hometown of Two Rivers (Wisconsin).
