Edwin Fithian, an engineer in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S. Steamer Frigate Susquehanna, accompanied Commodore Perry's Naval Expedition to Japan in 1854. The Susquehanna left the Bay of Yedo the day the treaty was to be signed to escort the U.S. minister to China.
