Benjamin Sherwood Pomeroy was born in 1911 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned a M.S. degree from Cornell University and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Iowa State University. He started his career at the University of Minnesota as a veterinary diagnostician in the Extension Division in 1934 where he became interested in avian diseases. He became a professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Public Health, and served as assistant dean and acting dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. His research on the prevention of diseases in turkeys helped make Minnesota one of the nation's top turkey growers and gave Pomeroy the nickname "Mr. Turkey." He retired from the University in 1981 and died in 2004.
