Journal kept while studying the law in Springfield, Ill. by future Colonel in the Union Army, state representative for Sangamon County and prominent Springfield lawyer with the firm Conkling and Gross. Born in New York, he came to Illinois when his father, Alba Gross a Baptist minister, moved the family via covered wagon to Knox County in 1844. William studied law while teaching at the Springfield Academy. After passing the bar in 1862 he went into partnership with his brother Eugene, also a lawyer.
