Lucy M. Johnson, sister of Marion Hay, was born Lucy Cornelia Jewell. After obtaining a Bachelors degree she became a teacher in a mission school. Later she returned to school, and at Radcliffe College earned a masters degree in English and Comparative Literature. While teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, she met Professor P.L. Hibbard, and they married in June of 1927. She later became very involved with community activities, including the Pacific Cooperative League.
In 1949 she remarried Clabe W. Johnson and moved with him to Yucca Valley. Johnson died in June of 1962. After this Lucy Johnson compiled a small book of his writings and a short biography, as well as a family history and a typescript volume of family letters.
