Underhill, Irvin Windfield, 1896-1982
Variant namesIrvin Windfield Underhill, minister and missionary with the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A (1928-1947), served in French Cameroun, West Africa (1929-1940).
He and his wife, Susan R. Underhill, were the first African American missionaries to the West Africa Mission. A civic leader in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he managed the Philadelphia Housing Authority's Richard Allen Homes (1941-1951) and served on the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority (1946-1954). In 1957, he became the first black pastor of an all-white Presbyterian congregation in the United States, First Presbyterian Church, Nunda, New York.
