"Nathaniel Coggeshall ..., son of Freegift (1657-1728) and Elizabeth née Matthews (1664-1748), was a lifelong resident of Newport, Rhode Island. He appears to have been a cooper. The journal records the sermons Coggeshall attended ... and the names of the ministers who preached them, including Reverends Clap, Tyler, Gardner, Seren [i.e. Searing?], Buel, Thather, Chorker, Gould, Clallen, Hilyer [i.e. Helyer?], and Elliot."--Book dealer notes. The journal writer was the great-grandson of John Coggeshall (1601-1647), the first President of the Colony of Providence Plantations, and grandson of Major John Coggeshall (1618-1708), a Governor's Assistant named in the Royal Charter of 1663 of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. John Nicholson Cole, in whose memory the journal is given, was a direct descendant of John Coggeshall, first President of the Colony of Providence Plantations.
