W. Glenn Norris was Tompkins County historian from the time the post was established in 1944 until his death in 1969. He wrote pamphlets and articles and gave lectures on local and regional history, recorded historical events and places in a series of paintings, and was a charter member and president of the Tompkins County Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a member of the Cayuga Museum of History and Art in Auburn, New York, of Historic Ithaca, and of the DeWitt Historical Society (Ithaca, N.Y.), for which he also served as president and in other official capacities.
