Construction on the second section of the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System in the years 1911-1914 was done under the direction of Lieutenants Singleton, Harris and Eastman, Corporal Edward R. McFarland, NCO in charge, and Corporal Charles Cavanaugh, construction quartermaster, all U.S. Army Signal Corps, and George M. Woods, civilian lineman and photographer.
Edward R. McFarland (d. 1942) was a corporal in the U.S. Army Signal Corps when he was NCO in charge of Signal Corps telegraph construction work on the second section of the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System in Interior Alaska in the years 1911-1914. In the early 1920s he was Alaska Railroad agent at McKinley Park. He moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1925.
