John Wheeler Church, Jr. was born in 1932 in Painesville, Ohio. His father was a chemical engineer. He grew-up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Church took his bachelor's degree in economics at Bowdoin College and his M.B.A. at Northwestern University (1967). After Bowdoin he served in the army. Then he did investment research on Wall Street for six years, after which he moved to Girard Bank in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1978 or 1979 he moved to the Glenmede Trust Company to head its investment division where he was a vice-president at the time of these interviews. At sometime after 1990 he became the chief investment officer for Girard Partners, Ltd. in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. He was president of the CFA Society of Philadelphia, 1981-1982.
