Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Fredric Nova MacMillan (1922-1998) grew up in Erie and Meadville, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 1943, he graduated with a B.A. in economics from Allegheny College in Meadville. Upon graduation, MacMillan joined the U.S. Navy on the destroyer escort ship USS Pavlic, serving as a lieutenant during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater. and during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. During his naval service, MacMillan received numerous medals and awards, including the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star, the American Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After resigning his commission in 1955, MacMillan joined General Motors, retiring as Regional Manager for the AC Delco Division in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1983. He married Marilyn and had three children: Gregory MacMillan, Laurie Jean MacMillan Condrasky, and Ellen Swartz.
