Harold C. Deutsch was born on 7 June 1904 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; received his B.A. (1924) and M.A. (1925) from the University of Wisconsin; and received a second M.A. (1927) and Ph. D. (1929) from Harvard University. Deutsch served on the faculty of the University of Minnesota (1929-1941 and 1946-1972). While in Minnesota, he hosted a widely listened to weekly radio program which explained the early years of World War II (WWII) to a Midwest audience. He was appointed Chief of the European Axis section, Board of Economic Warfare (1942-1943); and later directed political research on Europe, Africa, and the Near East for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) (1943-1945). In 1945, he became Chief of Research and Analysis of the OSS mission in Germany. After retiring from the University of Minnesota in 1972, Deutsch served as professor and Director of European Studies at the National War College (1972-1974). Then, he served for ten years at the U.S. Army War College (AWC) where he was first in the Directorate of Academic Affairs (DAA), then Harold K. Johnson Professor of Military History at the U.S. Army Military History Institute (USA MHI), and finally in the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) of AWC until his retirement in 1984. He remained active through correspondence and guest lectures until his death in 1995.

Harold Charles Deutsch was born on June 7, 1904 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He earned his B.A. in 1924 and M.A. in 1925 from the University of Wisconsin. In 1927 he earned an additional M.A. and a Ph.D. in 1929 from Harvard University. Dr. Deutsch became a professor of history at the University of Minnesota in 1929 and served as chair of the history department from 1960-1966. In addition to his academic appointment in Minnesota, Dr. Deutsch also taught at the National War College (1972-1974) and the U.S. Army War College (1974-1985). Dr. Deutsch was an internationally known expert on World War II and German history.
During World War II, he was chief of the European Axis Section of the Board of Economic Warfare and chief of political research for Europe, Africa and the Near East for the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the CIA. Dr. Deutsch was involved with interviewing German political and military prisoners, many who were later tried and executed for war crimes at the Nuremburg trials. Dr. Deutsch was able to bring his personal experiences into his teaching, making his course on World War II the most popular elective on campus. He is the winner of the prestigious Horace T. Morse Award, in recognition of outstanding undergraduate teaching, in 1971 and the College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher Award. Dr. Deutsch retired from the University of Minnesota as professor emeritus in 1972. Harold Deutsch died on May 15, 1995.

Harold C. Deutsch was a professor of History at the University of Minnesota whose research interests focused on World War II. He was a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1929. He came to the University of Minnesota at that time and during his tenure served as chairman of the History Department. He retired in 1972.
During World War II he served on the Board of Economic Warfare and with the Office of Strategic Services. After the war he worked as an interrogator of German war criminals at Nuremberg.
